THE PROOF OF GOD’S LOVE ROMANS 8: 5-11 Introduction: “God is love!” What proof do we have of this love? The world demands some proof. Based on the violence and pain they see in the world, they question our affirmation. In another context Paul responds. His response is to give the believer a basis for hope and assurance. The adversary will constantly be calling into question God’s love, and as we get to know ourselves better, we too will question. Paul sets forth convincing proof. I. THE INTERNAL PROOF OF THE WITNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. 1. The Gift of the Spirit. 2. The Work of the Spirit. II. THE ETERNAL PROOF IN THE CROSS. 1. The Persons for whom He died. • Without strength. • Ungodly • Sinners. • Enemies This is how God saw us when Christ died for us. 2. The Time He died. “In due time.” God chose the time and the place. Jesus was in charge of the events that led to the Cross. 3. The Manner of His death. He died a young man. He died a shameful death. He died a violent death. But He died! How can it be that He died such an unjust death? 4. The Purpose of His death. The heart of our understanding is in the little word “for”. He died for us, for sinners. The word has in it the idea that He died in our place. The picture is that of a person bending over another to protect them. The separation from God that we should have experienced fell on Him. He took our place.
When you think about questioning the love of God, read again the record of the Cross. He died that we might live. He gave His all for us while we were utterly helpless and undeserving! Based on the proof, we have a basis for hope. And we have a basis for assurance.
